Fairchild Launches SuperFET III MOSFET Family with Best-in-Class Efficiency and Reliability

Better Efficiency, EMI and Ruggedness Make SuperFET III MOSFETs Ideal for High Performance Products with Demanding Robustness and Reliability Requirements

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – September 20, 2016 /Wire4Tech/ Fairchild Semiconductor, now part of ON Semiconductor), today introduced its SuperFET® III family of 650V N-channel MOSFETs, the company’s new generation of MOSFETs that meet the higher power density, system efficiency and exceptional reliability requirements of the latest telecom, server, electric vehicle (EV) charger and solar products.

The SuperFET III MOSFET family combines best-in-class reliability, low EMI, excellent efficiency and superior thermal performance to make it an ideal choice for high performance applications. Complementing its performance characteristics, its broad range of package options gives product designers greater flexibility, particularly with size constrained designs.

SuperFET III technology has the lowest Rdson in any easy drive version of a Super Junction MOSFET, delivering best-in-class efficiency. It achieves this thanks to advanced charge balancing technology which also enables 44 percent lower Rdson than its SuperFET II predecessors, in the same package size.

A key factor in the SuperFET III family’s exceptional ruggedness and reliability is its best-in-class body diode and three times better single pulse Avalanche Energy (EAS) performance than its closest competitor.

The lower peak drain-source voltage during turn off of the 650V SuperFET III improves system reliability in low temperature operation because the breakdown voltage naturally drops by 5 percent at -25℃ junction temperature than room temperature and the peak drain-source voltage becomes higher at low temperature.

These reliability advantages are particularly important for industrial applications such as solar inverters, Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS) and EV chargers which must be capable of enduring higher or lower external ambient temperatures. Fairchild Addresses Thermal and Brownout Issues of Mobile Devices with New Buck-Boost Regulator

FAN49103 is the Newest Addition to Industry-Leading Family of High-Performance Power Management Products for High-Volume Mobile Applications

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – September 1, 2016 /Wire4Tech/ Fairchild (NASDAQ: FCS), a leading global supplier of high-performance power semiconductor solutions, today launched its most advanced digitally programmable buck-boost regulator for the power supplies used in smartphones, tablets and other battery-powered mobile devices. The FAN49103 regulator joins the rest of the popular FAN49100 family in meeting the critical requirements of these power supplies by combining the highest power density, the smallest solution size, the tightest transient regulation and best-in-class ripple performance.

“Our FAN49103 is an ideal buck-boost for virtually any smartphone, tablet or mobile device that can really benefit from the precious board space freed up by its extremely small solution size, which is 84 percent smaller than its closest competitor,” said Richard Lu, Vice President of Mobile Solutions for Fairchild. “The FAN49103 can also solve the excessive heat and brownout issues that designers of mobile devices strive to overcome.”

The FAN49103 can reduce thermal issues by providing a system power rail at the lowest possible voltage. This superior thermal performance prevents the excessive heat that can impact a device’s ability to function normally. This is a key advantage for smartphones as their small size makes them particularly vulnerable to excess heat. FAN49103 can also reduce or eliminate the need for heat sinks, which reduces bill of materials (BOM) costs, simplifies the design and saves additional board space.

The fast transient response of the FAN49103 counters brownouts by enabling larger pulsed loads to be supported, which reduces the effect of battery droop. It supports large loads up to 2.5A DC and can maintain a constant regulated output over the entire battery range so the system will operate normally despite battery sags.

The FAN49103 is complemented by other members of the FAN49100 family, including the recent FAN49101 buck-boost regulator used by several leading manufacturers, including LeEco, maker of smartphones, TVs and other connected consumer devices.

“The FAN49101’s ultra-low quiescent current can help to extend battery operation time, particularly from the factory to the end user’s hand. It simplifies the circuit design and helps in our logistic control flow. In addition, the excellent load and line transient response of FAN49101 helps system stability under wide operating conditions,” said David Kong, Hardware Manager at LeEco.

Fairchild’s USB Type-C Controllers are Compatible with Latest Type-C Specifications

FUSB302 Family Supports New Type-C PD 1.2 Standard

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – July 27, 2016 /Wire4Tech/ Fairchild (NASDAQ: FCS) a leading global supplier of high-performance semiconductor solutions, today announced that its FUSB302 family of USB Type-C controllers are the industry’s first to be compatible with the latest updates to the USB Type-C standard, including Power Delivery (PD) specification. This enables manufacturers using the FUSB302 to easily support all current and previous versions of the USB Type-C specifications in their products.

The USB Implementer Forum (IF) recently released updates to the USB Type-C, USB Type-C Cable and Connector, and USB Power Delivery specifications. The updates resolve known issues and add important new features, including support for new IEC power supplies.

Unlike other USB Type-C controllers, the FUSB302 was designed for use with existing microprocessors via the I2C protocol. This flexibility allows changes to the various USB Type-C specifications to be easily supported via firmware rather than hardware.

“Our FUSB302 line of USB Type-C controllers addresses manufacturers’ concerns over updates to the specifications, so they can easily add the next generation of USB functionality to their smartphones, tablets, PCs and other mobile devices,” said Myron Miske, Interface and Protection Product Line Director at Fairchild. “The FUSB302’s combination of small size, low power consumption and ‘investment protection’ advantages have made it a popular solution used in many products shipping today.”

The new FUSB302B is the latest addition to the FUSB302 family. It is the smallest USB Type-C controller with PD capability currently available, measuring a mere 1.2 mm x 1.3 mm in a 9-ball WLCSP package. Its small size is complimented by its ultra-low power consumption of 25µA, a critical advantage for battery-powered devices. FUSB302B also supports data role swap, power role swap, hard reset, soft reset, active cables and vendor defined messages (VDM) packet transmission.

Fairchild’s New Active Bridge Solution Delivers Best-in-Class Performance for Power Over Ethernet-Based IoT Devices

GreenBridge Delivers Thermal, Efficiency and Size Advantages Superior to Diodes for POE PDs

SUNNYVALE, Calif. — July 25, 2016 /Wire4Tech/ Fairchild (NASDAQ: FCS) a leading global supplier of high-performance semiconductor solutions, today enhanced its industry-leading GreenBridge™ active bridge quad MOSFET technology with FDMQ8205, the first member of its next-generation GreenBridge series for applications that receive power via Power Over Ethernet (POE), such as security cameras, wireless access points, LED lighting and other Powered Devices (PD).  Designers can lower operating temperature, increase efficiency and reduce the solution size of their devices by taking advantage of the GreenBridge solution’s best-in-class Rdson performance, extremely small form factor and superior thermal performance.

Advanced GreenBridge technology is compliant with the IEEE 802.3at standard and has up to 10 times lower power dissipation than Schottky diodes. This superior thermal performance allows designers to reduce or eliminate heat sinks to simplify their product design, decrease BOM costs and shrink PCB size.

“Dealing with heat has always been a critical design challenge, but even more so with these new generations of IoT devices that require 25.5W or more. The leading edge MOSFET technology in our latest GreenBridge devices help designers eliminate excessive heat and achieve key system design goals, including higher efficiency, ensuring standards compliance and decreasing overall size and reducing costs,” said Suman Narayan, vice president of the intelligent power FET division at Fairchild.

The extremely low conduction losses of the next-generation GreenBridge series are another important advantage as power and voltage must be maximized for the limited input power of POE systems. The GreenBridge series has best-in-class Rdson performance with 47 percent lower conduction losses compared to its closest competitor due to the power conversion efficiency of its optimized PowerTrench MOSFET technology.

The small size of GreenBridge devices also makes them ideal for new POE-based devices that need to be smaller than previous generations. At just 4.5 mm x 5 mm, the GreenBridge devices incorporate four MOSFETs in an MLP package connected in a full bridge. Further complementing their small size, the GreenBridge devices do not require an external driver, saving additional PCB space.

Fairchild’s Next-Generation PowerTrench MOSFETs Deliver Best-in-Class Performance

LONG BEACH, Calif. – March 21, 2016 /Wire4Tech/ Here at APEC 2016, Fairchild (NASDAQ: FCS), a leading global supplier of high-performance semiconductor solutions, today launched the flagship device of the company’s newest generation of 100V N-channel power MOSFETs, the FDMS86181 100V Shielded Gate PowerTrench® MOSFET.  The FDMS86181 is the first part in Fairchild’s new generation of PowerTrench MOSFETs and it delivers substantial improvements in efficiency, reduced voltage ringing and lower electromagnetic interference (EMI) for power supplies, motor drives and other applications requiring a 100V MOSFET.

Fairchild was an early pioneer of the successful PowerTrench MOSFET nearly 25 years ago and this latest generation of PowerTrench devices continues to keep the company at the forefront of MOSFET technology development, ahead of competitors and able meet customers’ most demanding system power requirements.

The primary advantages of the new FDMS86181 are its 40 percent reduction in Rdson which lowers conduction losses and its minimized gate charge (Qg) which reduces switching losses. The exceptionally low Qrr of the FDMS86181 virtually eliminates the voltage overshoots that cause ringing, which allows for the reduction or elimination of snubbers in product designs and reduces EMI.  This unique advantage of the FDMS86181 allows designers to both reduce product size and bill-of-materials (BOM) costs.

Fairchild Launches 1200V SiC Diode for High-Speed Solar Inverters and Rugged Industrial Applications

Superior Switching Performance Helps Manufacturers Meet Tough Energy Efficiency and EMI Regulations

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Fairchild (NASDAQ: FCS), a leading global supplier of high-performance semiconductor solutions, released its first 1200V silicon carbide (SiC) diode, the FFSH40120ADN, in its series of upcoming SiC solutions. The 1200V diode’s combination of superior switching performance, higher reliability and low electromagnetic interference (EMI) make it ideal for next-generation solar inverters, industrial motor controls and welders which are all increasingly required to be more energy efficient at higher power densities.

“The combination of market trends and tightening industry standards is driving the need for more energy efficient products and our new 1200V SiC diode is designed specifically to help manufacturers achieve these ever-greater efficiency requirements and with better reliability, ruggedness and cost efficiency,” said Jin Zhao, Vice President and General Manager of Fairchild’s High Power Industrial division. “We based this diode on silicon carbide due to the material’s considerable advantages over silicon, and we will add additional SiC-based semiconductors as we build a comprehensive family of SiC solutions.”

The FFSH40120ADN diode has the best leakage current performance in its class, leaking far less current than its competitors at temperatures up to 175 degrees Celsius. The key benefits of this 1200V SiC diode include its extremely fast switching and no reverse recovery current, which dramatically reduces switching losses compared to silicon and results in superior energy efficiency. Faster switching also allows manufacturers to reduce the size of their products’ magnetic coils and associated passive components, which improves packaging efficiency, reduces system weight and can reduce bill-of-materials (BOM) costs.

The diode’s ability to switch stably over a wide temperature range is another factor contributing to its exceptional performance, as is its zero recovery voltage which eliminates voltage overshoots.

The FFSH40120ADN diode also offers considerably greater ruggedness and reliability compared to equivalent silicon-based diodes due to SiC having superior thermal performance to silicon.  The breakdown field of SiC is 10x higher than that of silicon  and SiC also has 3x greater thermal conductivity.

Grundfos honors Fairchild with prestigious award for the second time in five years

SAN JOSE, Calif. – November 9, 2015 — Fairchild (NASDAQ: FCS), a leading global supplier of high-performance semiconductor solutions, was recently named the 2014 ‘Supplier of the Year’ by  Grundfos, the world’s largest manufacturer of pumps, annually producing approximately 18 million pumps for residential, commercial and industrial applications.

Fairchild was selected from among Grundfos’ approximately 3,500 suppliers for this award for its commitment to quality, on-time delivery, innovation and collaboration. Fairchild previously won this award in 2009 and is only the second two-time winner.
