FierceWireless Ranks Cohere as one of the Top 15 Wireless Industry Start-ups for 2016

Cohere is recognized for the potential of its groundbreaking OTFS technology

SANTA CLARA, Calif., – October 24, 2016 /Wire4Tech/ Cohere Technologies (cohere-technologies.com) today announced that it has been chosen as one of the top 15 wireless industry start-up companies for 2016 by FierceWireless in its annual “Fierce 15” list of start-ups with the potential of becoming a major industry player.  Cohere was one of hundreds of companies evaluated this year and was selected for this honor by the editors of FierceWireless based on the potential of the company’s revolutionary wireless modulation technology, OTFS™, to be a major advance in the development of 5G wireless services.

f15OTFS, which stands for Orthogonal Time, Frequency and Space, is a new paradigm in wireless modulation that addresses the critical capacity constraints and coverage issues that carriers face.  This next-generation wireless modulation scheme is uniquely able to overcome the challenges inherent in high-speed wireless connectivity and MIMO – primarily signal fading and signal reflection – ensuring excellent signal reception throughout coverage areas while maximizing throughput.

The same advantage that make OTFS an ideal solution for 5G can also dramatically improve performance in backhaul and fixed wireless access applications. Additionally, OTFS can also complement and enhance OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) and other legacy modulation schemes, enabling significantly greater capacity, throughput and coverage.

Several major wireless operators are currently in various states of testing OTFS and additional technical trials with other operators are also planned.  OTFS is also being evaluated by the 3GPP for inclusion in forthcoming 5G wireless standards and has been publicly supported by AT&T, China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, Telefonica and Telstra.

Being one of 2016’s elite Fierce15 is just the latest accolade for Cohere. Earlier this year the company was named a “Hot Tech Innovator and Company to Watch” by the industry analyst firm ABI Research. Cohere was also named to the “GSV Pioneer 250” list of companies poised to become the next generation of game-changing businesses – for the second consecutive year – by Global Silicon Valley, a merchant bank focused on technology ventures.

The members of this year’s Fierce 15 were selected primarily on their potential to become major players in the global wireless industry, though companies had to first meet certain requirements in order to be considered. To qualify for consideration, the companies must be privately held, well-funded, emerging and either based in the U.S. or conduct a significant amount of business here.

Cohere Named 2016 CTIA Emerging Technology Awards Finalist

10th annual E-Tech Awards recognize Cohere Technologies for its OTFS wireless modulation

Telefónica Invites Cohere Technologies to Join 5TONIC Lab

Cohere’s breakthrough OTFS technology to be featured in growing open ecosystem of innovation for 5G excellence

SANTA CLARA, Calif. and MADRID – August 2, 2016 /Wire4Tech/ Cohere Technologies (www.cohere-technologies.com) today announced that Telefonica, one the largest telecommunications companies in the world, has invited Cohere to join the 5TONIC Research and Innovation Laboratory  based in Madrid, Spain. 5TONIC was established by Telefonica and the IMDEA Networks Institute to create an open ecosystem for research and innovation in which industry and academia come together to boost technology development and business ventures as the industry races to establish 5G technology by the year 2020. Cohere will bring its modulation and systems expertise to 5TONIC.

La rompedora tecnología OTFS de Cohere figurará en un ecosistema abierto de innovación para la excelencia en redes 5G

SANTA CLARA, California (EE.UU.) y MADRID, España – 2 agosto, 2016 /Wire4Tech/ Cohere Technologies anunció hoy que Telefónica, una de las mayores compañías de telecomunicaciones del mundo, ha invitado a Cohere a unirse al laboratorio de investigación e innovación 5TONIC , con sede en Madrid, España. 5TONIC fue establecido por Telefónica y el Instituto IMDEA Networks con el propósito de crear un ecosistema abierto de investigación e innovación, en el que el mundo académico y empresarial se unieran para impulsar el desarrollo tecnológico y proyectos empresariales innovadores, al tiempo que la industria se apresura a establecer la tecnología 5G para el año 2020. OFTS, que significa tiempo, frecuencia y espacio ortogonales, es un nuevo paradigma en la modulación inalámbrica. SANTA CLARA, Calif.wire4tech – Cohere Technologies, a well-funded startup pioneering new wireless connectivity technologies, is building its executive team with the addition of Roy Shay as vice president of engineering and Mike Cook as vice president of sales.  In these strategic positions, both Shay and Cook are building teams to accelerate commercial availability of Cohere’s first products based on its groundbreaking wireless modulation, Orthogonal Time Frequency and Space, or OTFS™.

Cook now leads the company’s sales team, using his extensive contacts within top wireless carriers and other service providers to drive sales of Cohere’s forthcoming MIMO radio products. A veteran sales executive with more than 20 years in the wireless telecommunications industry, he comes to Cohere having served as vice president of sales at BridgeWave Communications, which specializes in point-to-point, gigabit wireless networking solutions.

Cohere Validates Its Wireless Technology Can Scale to Gigabit 5G

Cohere’s breakthrough OTFS technology perfectly scales MIMO without signal drops or fading in every topography, including high-speed mobility

SANTA CLARA, Calif.,wire4tech – Cohere Technologies (cohere-technologies.com) today announced that comprehensive trials of its OTFS technology validated its ability to consistently maintain high-speed connectivity, even when encountering the most difficult scenarios for wireless networking. Cohere’s OTFS outperformed all other modulation schemes that were tested , and was able to extract high-speed capacity that perfectly scaled with the addition of additional antennas, making OTFS a true breakthrough.

“5G is not only the next generation of wireless network technology, but a necessary evolution to address both the increased number of devices on wireless networks, and the increased demand for capacity by each device,” said Shlomo Rakib, CEO of Cohere Technologies.  “The goal is to deliver gigabit speeds on networks, but there are numerous technical challenges that make uniform delivery – outside of a laboratory – impossible with today’s radio access network (RAN) technology. The technical trials just completed show that Cohere has solved these technical challenges, and we can start helping mobile network operators evolve their infrastructure to higher-speed 5G networks.”

In a major wireless network technology first, capacity scaled perfectly as additional OTFS-enabled MIMO antennas were added to the configuration.  Because today’s MIMO radios have substantial signaling overhead and lack visibility into the channel state, they lack the ability to scale linearly as more antennas are added to the array. Since OTFS is a highly-efficient modulation scheme and has precise channel state awareness, it solves a significant technical challenge for enabling Gigabit 5G.

Unlike one dimensional channels currently used in 4G and LTE networks, OTFS – which stands for Orthogonal Time Frequency and Space – is a paradigm shift in wireless networking that creates a two dimensional view of the delay and Doppler of the wireless channel. Through this two dimensional view, OTFS reveals the geometry of the channel and captures precise channel state information from all distributed antennas. With this channel state information, OTFS overcomes inherent challenges to high-speed wireless connectivity and MIMO – primarily signal fading and signal reflection – and ensures excellent signal reception throughout coverage areas while also maximizing throughput. The benefits to network operators are 100 percent coverage in the intended area, greatly increased data rates and increased opportunities for significant cost savings.

“Mobile network operators continue to be challenged in harnessing existing spectrum to achieve greater efficiencies in mobile broadband connectivity,” said Sathya Atreyam, research manager for the worldwide wireless network infrastructure practice at IDC. “It is imperative for the next generation radio access technologies to not only consider mitigating interference, ensuring pervasive coverage and avoiding signal degradation, but more importantly do all this with the most viable economic model.”

Though Cohere Technologies is preparing to produce Massive MIMO radios that include 64 x 64 antenna arrays, the company’s trials – conducted in partnership with wireless operators – used currently available MIMO radios with 2 x 2 and 4 x 4 antenna arrays.

The tests spanned urban settings with tall buildings, mountainous regions, rural settings and moving vehicles, all at various distances, with and without line-of-site configurations. While OFDM-based radios used for comparison would fade, drop signals or lose capacity, the OTFS radios never faded – even at distances beyond 4 km – and maintained connectivity, even in the most challenging mobile scenarios. The tests were able to maintain a minimum of 4bps/Hz in 10MHz achieving at least 120 Mbps up to 320Mbps.

“Network engineers understand that the most common uses of mobility are also typically the most challenging,” added Rakib. “People using mobile data in cars, moving trains or even just walking down the street can present an enormous technical challenge for the current modulation schemes being considered for 5G networks. But Cohere’s OTFS easily handled them all, without fail and at speeds that astounded our network partners in our trials.”
